Setup & support
Let’s get Volumate
working for you.
Start with the setup steps below, or jump to a common issue. If you’re still stuck, email us.
Enable and get started.
Enable in Safari
Once installed, open Volumate and enable it in Safari → Settings → Extensions. You can then quit the companion app.
Allow YouTube access
Allow access to youtube.com in the Safari profile you use. Refresh any YouTube tabs already open.
Hover and scroll
Move your pointer over the video and scroll. Open the toolbar popup to change sensitivity or enable Option-scroll.
For Safari’s installation and permissions controls, see Apple’s Safari extensions guide .
Common questions.
Scrolling doesn't change the volume
Enable Volumate in Safari, allow youtube.com access in your current profile, and refresh YouTube. Check Enable Volumate in the popup. In Option-scroll mode, hold Option while your pointer is over the video. Enable just one copy of the extension.
The popup can't connect or asks me to refresh
Refresh existing YouTube tabs after an extension update so the popup and page scripts use the same version. Check website access, then use Retry in the toolbar. A connection error alone does not necessarily mean access was denied.
Shorts scrolls to another video
Shorts support is off by default. Enable it in the popup if you want volume control there. Option-scroll lets you adjust volume with Option held and navigate the feed normally without it.
The volume indicator differs from YouTube's media gain
YouTube's loudness normalization can make the underlying media gain lower than your chosen player volume. Volumate normally uses the player's own controls. If that integration is unavailable, the popup reports Using basic volume control.
My preferences won't load or save
Use Retry and check the popup's warning. Help includes Reset settings if you want to return all preferences to their defaults; resetting requires confirmation. Optional diagnostics can be copied locally for support and contain no URLs, video details, or browsing history.

Still need a hand?
Email your app, Safari, and macOS versions, what you expected, and what happened. For website-specific problems, the hostname is enough; please leave out private account or video details.
